BACK TO LIFE, BACK TO REALITY
Like most people who work in the film industry, especially in Seattle (though it's probably the same in every city), January starts out dead. And I was starting out with a little more than pocket change. I was worried I would never pull a paycheck again. The freelancer's lament, et al.
At a New Years Day party I fronted the fact that I was a Script Supervisor looking for work. At a fundraiser for the Seattle filmmaker (as a writer/director and as a 1st Assistant Director) Megan Griffith's new feature, I did the same thing. And it is starting to pay off. I think it was all on the same day last week that I got three job offers. One possible job offer from the new TV show from "Bill Nye the Science Guy." One job offer from this movie that's shooting on Vashon Island in February. Those are the two jobs that I got from networking at these parties, and of course they conflict. Because the TV job would be longer term, I'm (still) holding out hope for that one, and will have to tell the Vashon Island job whether or not I need to pass on Wednesday or so. But that's only two of three jobs.
Another job offer came in out of the blue. Last summer I worked on a show for Fox Sports called Destination Wild, and the producer of that recommended my services to a guy who was coming to Seattle to shoot a corporate video for ClearW*ire, which is a new wireless cable company based on WiFi technology and the like. Initially that also conflicted with the TV job, but when the TV job got pushed I took the corporate gig. I'm working on that coporate gig right now.
That's why I haven't finished my reviews of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and Notes on a Scandal. I've been busy.
Plus, I've been transcribing my interview with Charles Mudede, the author of the new Sundance documentary Zoo, which I'll link to when it posts.
Plus, I've been getting ready to go to the Rotterdam Film Festival as a programmer for the Seattle International Film Festival. More on that later.

Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill Nye has a new TV show? Cool! What is this new show about?
Bill Nye's show is called BizKids. It's about teaching kids some principals of business, I believe. I like the idea. It's about time somebody trained an army to dethrone Donald Trump from whatever business pedestal he has positioned himself upon.
Are you sure he's on it? A Google makes it seem it's *produced* by the people who produced his old Science Guy show, but it doesn't say he's actually on the show -- and I would think they'd lead with that. Just wondering. Somehow money and business doesn't seem his thing nearly like Science. ("Money rules?" "The piggy bank....of BUSINESS?" [insert trumpet call]) I dunno. Sometimes people can cleverly insert a name, legitimately, into materials to make it seem like more.
I had the impression that he was on-camera talent for this as well as a producer. That would make sense as a way to piggyback on the popularity of his last show. But I could be wrong. If I get the gig, I'll be able to say more. All I know for sure is that it's called BizKids.
...I dunno, the Vashon film sounds kinda cool... Zach and the other two guys will make it fun, I'm sure. And a pretty cool place to hang out, even in the winter...
Hey Andy, Any chance I could talk you into picking up an extra catalogue for me (and, umm, mailing it to me too...)? If you have an idea of how much those things will be (and I know they can be pretty pricey outside of SIFF), I can even send you a check or paypal or whatever's easiest for you ahead of time. I know you're going to be busy as hell while you're there and all that, but I'd appreciate it.

UPDATE: The BizKids job has been pushed. They don't need me yet. Maybe March, maybe later, if at all. The good news is that I'm available for the Vashon shoot, which is a high school wrestling movie, and I took the job. The above poster Pete says that Zach the Executive Producer will help keep it fun. I know the sound guys and a couple of grips on this show, and they're great. Most of the people I work with on Seattle crews are great. I'm looking forward to the job.
Andy! Small town man! I helped build the light grid for BizKids and I'll be gripping on the Vashon show! I'm surprised we don't run into eachother more often. When are you heading to the island?
